Vine maple. This deciduous small tree typically develops multiple trunks with age and is often characterized as having a vining habit (thus the common name). White (not particularly showy) flowers appear in spring but the true ornamental value of this plant is seen in fall when the foliage turns vibrant shades of golden yellow and deepest red. Many gardeners have called this plant deer-proof. (But don't hold us to that!) Plant in full sun to part shade and provide moderate water. Hardy to below 0F. California to British Columbia.
