Calamagrostis foliosa

Cape Mendocino reed grass is a graceful perennial with blue-gray foliage clustered into loose mounds to 18 inches tall. Many of the leaf blades have a touch of purple which adds a delightful accent to this California native. Purple panicles appear just above the foliage in mid spring and then turn tawny blond as they mature. It is best with some summer irrigation, perhaps moderately if in full sun, and only occasionally in partial shade. Cape Mendocino reed grass is useful bordering lawns, in mixed perennial bed, massed, or as a component of a coastal meadow. We don't recommended it for hot, interior climates. Hardy to 0F.
