Western spiraea. A California native, this deciduous shrub hales from the cooler, wetter regions of Northern California and so, requires regular garden water and protection from afternoon sun in hot, interior climates. Thin vertical shoots develop annually and bear dark green, toothed leaves that are felty beneath. In late summer tall spires of numerous, tiny deep pink flowers appear at the branch tips. Prune out oldest branches periodically as flowering occurs on new wood. Plants grow to 6-8’ and are generally more tall than wide. Hardy to 0F.
